The world is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion
- Thomas Paine
Born and educated in the United Kingdom, Christopher Warren-Smith served in the British Army as an officer in the Royal Army Service Corps based in Scotland. This was followed by international business appointments in India, Iran and Hong Kong before he returned to England. There he qualified as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Administrators, the Institute of Directors and the Institute of Management as well as a Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. In 1995, he moved with his wife to the United States where they now live. They have three much loved daughters.
On June 4th, 2001, Christopher joined United Airlines, flying with them from San Francisco to Chicago on Monday, September 10th, 2001. Following the tragic events of September 11th, he was able to witness at first hand, crisis management at its most caring and professional. 24 hour volunteer task forces were galvanized into action. Over 1,000 flight attendants who had been stranded away from home or domicile were contacted by telephone. Every hotel in Chicago where crews were on enforced layover was visited. The first flights to arrive at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport were met. A 24-hour welcome reception was held in the Chicago domicile for all returning crews.
Perhaps never before in its long and proud history has United Airlines been so deserving of its name. Perhaps never before has its record of multi-ethic diversity been so admired. Perhaps never before has the company had so tightly knit and committed a workforce with which to build for the future and to achieve its mission of being The worldwide airline of choice.
Effective October 31st, 2001, Christopher was one of the 20,000 employees to be furloughed. A firm believer in the notion that God only closes one door in order to open another, Christopher saw this temporary interruption in his career as a heaven sent opportunity to put Comforting Scriptures on the world wide web where it would be available to all who are in any kind of need. Christopher resumed his career on April 1, 2002, the first working day after Easter Sunday with its wonderful message of all things new.
With particular reference to the events of September 11th, as well as anything else that might befall us, Comforting Scriptures records at the foot of page one, the following words taken from The Gospel according to St. John, chapter 16, verse 33; if you, the reader, can find peace and good cheer in the midst of tribulation, Comforting Scriptures will have more than served its purpose:
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer: I have overcome the world.
